Hair loss can be a hereditary condition, experienced by both men and women. It is important to understand the mechanism of pattern baldness and create the best conditions to maintain a healthy head of hair.

Scalp hairs grow at a rate of approximately 1.25cm per month, after a resting phase of around 90 days new hair replaces the old hair which has been shed. Most individuals loose between 50-100 hairs per day, this is not alarming as the average head of hair has 100,000 individual shafts of hair.

The normal cycle, changes in people who experience pattern hair loss, the growing phase becomes shorter and the resting phase becomes longer. The hair loss takes place over several years and by the time the person realises that their hair has stop growing the hair loss is already in a progressive state.

Other factors can also effect the growth of hair, for example diet and nutrition, stress and trauma, environmental pollutants and some prescribed medication. Also hair loss can be caused by some medical conditions and it is important that these causes are excluded and treated by a medical doctor.
